Self Employment

I am officially self-employed. This involves:

  • Registering for self-employment with the Revenue (done).
  • Registering a company name (not done) and its corresponding domain name (done).
  • “Networking” on-line and off.
  • Shaving regularly.
  • Contracting/nixering for short amounts of time both on-site (at the moment) and at home (in a couple of weeks).
  • “Open-source Development”. I.e. mucking about on interesting side-projects.
  • Being my own (poor man’s) host.
  • Making my own sandwiches at lunchtime.
  • Working on my own stuff with some of it hopefully being profitable.
  • Attempting to maintain a clear division between work and not-work.
  • Cycling more to a) get to random office b) get out of the house c) pit my meditative Tai Chi foo against the rage inspired by Dublin’s roads.

Hey Mackers! Good going. I was bloody terrified when I became self employed, but honestly, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done career wise. Even if it hadn’t become the succesful venture it is (:p), it’s worth it for the learning experience alone, which is invaluable.

Best of luck, and I hope you end up like me, working six hours a day and making LOTSAMONEH.

Everyone loves Bytemark! Though you don’t host clients’ sites there, do you?!

Not at the moment, but I wouldn’t see the problem for using it for non-mission-critical static sites.

For everything else it’s the perfect stopgap until I can afford something meatier.

There’s a trick to the CRO. If you get an electronic RBN application ready and hand deliver it into the CRO, it is usually registered the same day.
Plus, if you’re quick, you could grab a .ie domain from Blacknight for €30 (ex VAT)
